Sukhvir Sanghal (1914 - 2006)
Sukhvir Sanghal was an Indian artist who transformed the technique of wash painting by adapting traditional Chinese and Japanese methods through the Indian concept of rasa—the theory of emotional expression. His paintings conveyed deeply personal ideas and emotions, often unfolding in thematic series that resembled epics in literature. He was also the first in India to develop an original technique for tapestry in figure composition, landscape, and portraiture with full tonal values. His innovative approach to imaginative, idealistic, and subjective Indian painting was articulated in his book Bhartiya Chitrakala Paddhati. He further refined a durable process of lacsit painting on wood using water and tempera as mediums. Drawing inspiration from Ajanta Caves traditions, along with Rajput and Mughal styles, he created a distinctive Indian style that harmoniously incorporated selected Eastern and Western technical principles. In his book Evolution of Art and Artist, he explored the relationship between art, the soul, and the existence of God through Venetian colour theory. Owing to his profound artistic vision and inspiring mentorship, he came to be widely regarded as a pillar of artistic excellence.
